Personal Injury Protection

Mandatory:

PIP, also referred to as “No-Fault” Coverage, is a legal requirement in Minnesota. Regardless of who is

at fault, PIP covers bodily injury to covered persons caused by an accident involving an insured private

passenger motor vehicle, up to the PIP limits on your policy.

This coverage pays for up to $20,000 for Medical Expenses and $20,000 for Economic Expenses (work

loss, essential services, funeral expenses, and survivor’s loss), up to a combined total of $40,000.

The deductible you choose is the amount of a claim you agree to pay per incident. In general choosing

a higher deductible will lower your rate.

PIP also covers (who):

You while in another person’s vehicle.

You as a pedestrian or bicyclist.

Your relatives living in your home.

Certain passengers who do not have their own PIP.

Certain licensed drivers who drive your vehicle with your permission.

PIP Covers (what):

Medical Expenses- up to $20,000

Economic Expenses- up to $20,000

Work Loss -85% of lost income, up to $250 per week.

Essential services- up to $200 per week

Funeral Expenses- up to $2,000

Survivor’s Economic Loss- limit will vary by carrier

These benefits are subject to a combined total limit of $40,000

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) stacked or unstacked?

Stacked PIP allows you to add together the PIP coverage limits on each auto in the event of an accident, for an additional premium charge(the limits for each car are combined to form one higher limit).

Unstacked PIP means that the limits may not be added together and are the maximum amount payable regardless of the number of vehicles on your policy.
